MUSEUM SHIP THE MERCATOR

Discover a piece of maritime history on board the museum ship the Mercator in Ostend! Designed by the famous polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache, this impressive three-master was built in Scotland. With just two commanders and 54 adventure voyages, the Mercator has a fascinating history . In 1956 the ship brought the remains of Father Damien back to Belgium. In 1961, the Mercator was converted into a museum ship and since 1964 it has shined as a showpiece in the marina of Ostend. Step aboard and travel back in time through unique objects, photos and stories of exciting sea voyages.

THE WESTERN DAM - 'OOSTEROEVER'

Highly recommended when visiting Ostend!

A walk on the new western breakwater in Ostend is a must! This impressive construction protects the harbor and the city center against waves up to 4.80 meters high. The breakwater is publicly accessible in good weather and offers a breathtaking view of the sea and the city . End your walk with a visit to the many new shops on the Oosteroever, easily accessible by free ferry!

THE CHURCH OF SAINT PETER AND PAUL

A visit to the mausoleum of the first queen of Belgium, Louise-Marie.

The majestic neo-Gothic Peter and Paul Church is located in the heart of Ostend. This impressive church replaces the old St. Peter's Church that burned down in 1896, of which only the iconic, popularly called 'Peperbusse' remains. King Leopold II's prestige project, designed by architect Louis Delacenserie, is inspired by cathedrals such as the Cologne Cathedral and the Vienna Votive Church. Visit this historic site and admire its beautiful architecture.

Every Sunday is also a shopping Sunday in Ostend! Pure shopping fun!

In Ostend you can shop when it suits you, seven days a week. Most shops in the city center and in Torhoutsesteenweg are also open on Sundays . From doing some quick shopping to spending a whole afternoon shopping, it's possible all week long, from Monday to Sunday (and even on public holidays). An unprecedented luxury that you will not find in any other Flemish city.
